  Prologue:

  Amber

As soon as I heard the shouts and the gunshot downstairs, I dove straight under my bed. It wouldn’t be long before anyone came to search the room, but there was no way out. I didn’t have a fire escape outside the room and the other way out of the house was downstairs. I was stuck.

My stomach rolled. I pressed a hand to my belly. Please, don’t let me lose this. I couldn’t bring myself to think about it. Not again.

They were here. The cartel was here. Ruiz was out for blood, and he didn’t like being told no. I knew we were in trouble as soon as he showed up and I was right. But Khloe hadn’t listened. She thought she knew everything, that I was just a silly little girl who hadn’t seen any of the world yet, so I had no say.

The boss could be a real bitch sometimes. She had no idea what I went through. And I had been through this before.

My hands were shaking as I retrieved my phone from the carpet, where I had dropped it after crawling under the bed and found a familiar number. He wouldn’t get here in time, I knew it. But I just wanted to hear his voice, especially if it happened to be the last time.

  I wanted him to know.

Diesel answered on the third ring.

“Hey, baby girl. How’s my favorite lady?”

Baby girl. Favorite lady. I wished he was here right now.

  “Ruiz is raiding the brothel.”

  “What?!”

“Right now.” I tried to keep my voice a whisper even as I could feel the panic building. “They’re ransacking every room. Khloe told them they were forbidden entry and Ruiz got mad. It’s only a matter of time before they find me.”

I knew Diesel would drop everything. With everything going on with the club and the cartel, the bikers would do anything to go after the cartel.

I could hear Diesel saying something to someone at the other end. Then he was back on the phone, his voice more urgent.

“Keep calm, Amber, and stay right where you are. I’m coming right now.”

  “Diesel…”

“Don’t talk, honey. They’ll find you. Just lie there and wait. I’m coming.”

Then I heard my door bang open. They were going to find me. But I couldn’t keep myself silent. Diesel had to know.

  “I’m pregnant.”

“What?” Diesel bellowed. “What did you say?”

  “I said I’m…”

Then someone grabbed my ankles and yanked me out. The cell phone disappeared from my hand and I was hauled up against a hard body with vice-like arms around my middle. I kicked out and struggled. No way was I going without a fight.

Then something was pressed over my mouth and nose. I tried not to breathe, but the scent from the cloth seeped into my nostrils and down my throat. It made me gag. It also made me dizzy.

  Then everything went black.

  Chapter One

  Diesel

My heart was pounding as I shot through Eden, my bike almost sliding out from under me as I took corners too sharply. Somehow, he stayed upright and ploughed on in the direction of Khloe’s brothel.

Fernandez had gone too far. Khloe’s place was not a commodity to be messed about with. You played nice with the fiery madam, or you paid the price. I had found that out very quickly when I first met Khloe. Fernandez had to know he was crossing a line.

If I or the GRMC didn’t kill Fernandez, Khloe just might.

And Amber. I tried not to panic when I thought about Amber. Her phone call was still playing on my mind. She was pregnant. What happened if she lost the baby? What if they killed her? I didn’t want to think about it.

Knowing Amber was in danger was enough for me to feel panic for the first time in years. The bastards wouldn’t know what had hit them once I got hold of them.

I could see that there had been some disruption at Khloe’s place. The front door was barely hanging on to its hinges, splinters across the floor. I parked on the sidewalk, grabbed my gun from inside the seat, and hurried inside. Glass crunched under my boots as I made my way slowly through the lobby. My instincts were on alert, keeping an ear out for any noises out of place.

But the building sounded quiet. Very quiet. Had they taken Khloe as well? Years of battlefield experience managed to keep me calm, but barely. Slowly, I made my way upstairs to Amber’s room. Her door had been kicked in, and there were signs of a scuffle in her bedroom. I had always teased Amber about how pink it was. Pink sheets, pink curtains… everything was pink and princess-like. Now it looked like a bomb had hit the place. Everything had been ripped to shreds.

I checked the other rooms, but they were all empty, everything turned upside-down. A few of them had indications that the girls had fought back. I even saw a spray of blood across one wall.

Those bastards were going to get it.

I made my way back downstairs. Then I heard it. A shuffling coming down the hall. It was from the direction of Khloe’s office near the back of the building. Keeping my gun trained on the door, I stalked down the hall. The door was opened, a hole in one of the panels where someone had kicked it in. Khloe was standing by her desk, standing at the sheaf of papers in her hands. She didn’t look resigned, scared. She looked angry.

  “Khloe?”

Khloe looked up. Her expression didn’t change when she saw me standing there.

“I was wondering when someone was going to turn
up,” she said icily.

I put the safety on and tucked my gun into the back of my jeans as I entered the room.

  “What happened?”

“What does it look like?” Khloe gestured around us. “We got raided. It was Fernandez’s men. They barged in, took all of the girls and trashed the place on the way out.” She threw her papers onto the desk. Some of them fluttered down to the floor. “Ruiz said he wouldn’t be disrespectful to my business, and now look at it.”

I didn’t care about Khloe’s feelings right now. I had more important things to worry about.

“And Amber,” I pressed. “What about Amber?”

  “She was taken as well.”

I had figured that out, but it wasn’t until then that the words sank in. I kicked at Khloe’s desk before kicking one of her chairs over.

“Leave my furniture alone!” Khloe snapped. “I’ve had enough of people trashing my business without you adding to it.”

“Fuck your furniture, Khloe. They’ve got Amber!”

Khloe snorted and folded her arms. Right now, she was looking like a petulant teenager.

“Diesel, Amber’s only a piece of meat. A leg-over. Someone who has sex for money. You can’t be that annoyed that someone’s taken her.”

Hearing Khloe talk that coldly about one of her girls filled me with rage. Then I checked myself. Where had that come from? I took a deep breath, which made the rage abate, but not much.

“Amber is a person, Khloe. You need to stop thinking about her as a piece of property that brings in your income. Compared to the other girls, she’s just a kid.”

“You age very rapidly in this job. Amber may be practically a child, but you don’t stay that way for long.”

“Don’t be a bitch, Khloe. Amber’s pregnant. With my baby!” The words still felt odd as I said them. “No one’s taking her from me.”

  Khloe arched an eyebrow.

“You really care about a baby? I never took you to be sentimental about children, Diesel.”

“At least give me a fucking chance!” I slammed my hand onto the desk. That made Khloe jump and take half a step back. “The cartel isn’t going to be kind to her. You know as well as I do that if you’re anything less than perfect in their eyes, you’re dead. With Amber…”

They’d kill her. I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud.

Khloe sighed and shook her head. “No, they won’t kill Amber. They need her. Those girls are commodities. They bring good money.”

“Would you stop thinking about your girls in terms of money?”

“What else am I supposed to think? Fernandez took all my income away!”

  I sneered. “Well, you haven’t worked in a while…”

I stepped back as Khloe took a swing at me, her fist missing my face. Khloe glowered at me, the fire back in her eyes.

  “Bastard.” She hissed.

“Right back at you.” I ran my hand over my head. “Do you know where Amber is, Khloe?”

  “No.”

That was said far too quickly, and I saw a flicker in her eyes. I advanced on her, feeling some satisfaction when Khloe backed up.

“I don’t believe you. You do know where they’re going.”

Khloe’s jaw tightened. She pulled herself up to her full height, lifting her chin defiantly.

“Listen, Diesel. I don’t want to get into it.”

“Not get into it?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “They’ve kidnapped all your girls! You don’t have a business!”

“I can get more girls in. I just don’t like the fast turnover.” Khloe shook her head. “I’m just sick and tired of my girls getting caught in the middle of the goddamn war between you guys and the cartel. It’s just a lot easier if I stay out of it.”

  “Bullshit.”

And it was. I didn’t know Khloe as well as Mason did, but I did know that Khloe loved conflict. She thrived on it. The woman could lead her own gang if she wanted. It was a wonder she hadn’t made a criminal gang out of her girls; some of them were very ruthless.

But not Amber. Even after everything she had been through, that girl had an innocent sweetness about her. It was endearing. I couldn’t keep myself away. I didn’t believe in love anymore, but the affection I had for Amber was enough.

That’s what I believed. And I wasn’t about to lose that small bit of sweetness in my life.

“Things were great a while back,” Khloe lamented, slumping against the desk. “But now? People have fucked it up, and it’s not great at all.”

I didn’t want to hear it.

“Stop feeling sorry for yourself, Khloe, and tell me where they’ve taken Amber.”

Still, Khloe said nothing. My gut said that she knew something, if not the exact location. This wasn’t planned – Khloe seemed genuinely pissed up about it – but there was something she wasn’t saying. My instinct was to draw it out of her, but I wasn’t about to raise a hand to the bitch, even if I wanted to.

I had to barter with her. I didn’t want to barter with the woman at all. I had some very high standards. But this was for Amber and the other girls. Nothing else.

Mason was going to kill me for this. “Listen, if you help me find out where Amber is and she’s alive, I’ll make sure you have complete protection against the cartel. But only if Amber’s alive.”

Khloe stared at me. She snorted.

“You can’t promise that, Diesel. You’re not the boss.”

“But I’m Mason’s right-hand man. I can give a promise like that if needs be.” I was surprised at the lie as it flowed easily off my tongue. “And once Mason hears about this, he’ll agree with me as well. Regardless of your involvement, Khloe, those girls don’t need to be put in the middle.” I approached Khloe, keeping just out of reach. It was very tempting to shake the damn woman. “Help me find Amber, and you’ll be protected by us.”

Mason wouldn’t agree to this. He hadn’t agreed to Noah putting Liz in a safe house with armed protection. But I would make it a solemn promise from himself to keep the brothel, and most specifically Amber, out of harm’s way. Even if it brought Mason’s anger down on my head.

Khloe was still staring at me. Her eyes narrowed. “I don’t believe you.”

“Have I ever broken a promise?”

Khloe hesitated. She was still arguing with herself. I could see the confusion, the wariness and the frustration passing across her eyes. Finally, she sighed and nodded.

“Okay, fine. For now.” She prodded me in the chest. “But don’t fuck this up, Diesel. I’ll do anything to make sure my business doesn’t get disrupted again, even if means becoming your enemy.”

I would take that. Having Khloe as an enemy, right now, sounded like a lesser evil.

  Chapter Two

  Diesel

I was right. Mason wasn’t happy at all. He didn’t like his men making promises without putting them past him first. He had the final decision. I knew Mason and Khloe’s friendship had been on unstable ground ever since Mason had fallen in love with Cassie after he had bought her. He had certainly changed since Cassie had come into his life, which infuriated Khloe.

And Mason having anything to do with Khloe wasn’t going to make Cassie happy. She was still pissed off at the madam. I couldn’t blame her, after everything that had happened.

Mason was pacing around his office. His scowl had gotten darker and darker as I told him about the state of the brothel and what had happened. He bared his teeth, looking like a feral animal.

  “Fernandez did all this?”

“Yes.” I scratched at my beard. “I don’t exactly know why, but there is a big reason for this.” I hesitated. “They’re not going to become commodities in their human trafficking line, are they?”

That was the biggest fear, one that had stayed with me as I had returned to the clubhouse. Amber couldn’t go that way. She couldn’t.

“It’s more than likely that’s exactly what they were taken for,” Mason said grimly. “Prostitutes
are perfect. They have no one looking for them. And if they’re clean from diseases, they incredibly valuable.”

“I know how it works, Mason,” I snapped.

“I know you do. I’m just making sure of that.” Mason took off his bandanna and wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Because if Amber is pregnant, they’re going to consider her used goods. No one wants a pregnant girl on their hands, and when they do, they don’t go for very much.”

“Or they do because it’s a fetish of the bastards vying for her.” I said grimly. “Which means either Amber’s going to be a treasured piece, or she’s on borrowed time.”

Letting out an angry curse, I kicked the filing cabinet. It almost toppled over, sending the papers and files on top scattering to the ground. The cabinet wobbled violently before it stopped.
